Integrated is not Identical: Why Sports Teams Can Have One Message With Many Voices

If your audience differs from channel to channel should your messaging still be the same across all channels? Yes but also no, but let me explain.
For sports marketers, connecting with fans is not only about picking the right channel and hoping fans engage, but adapting to different channels to increase awareness of your team. It's important to understand that integrated communications isn't about identical messaging across channels. As a sports marketer you must learn the art of adapting your messaging across channels because using the exact same communication across every channel isn't integration at all, it's just copying and pasting.
What creates alignment:
Core Message - What should the audience understand?
Target Audience - Who are we speaking to?
Tone - How should the message sound?
Call to Action - What are the next steps for the audience?
Brand Identity - What will be recognizable on all channels?
Imagine you are a communications professional for a football club and you have to promote a rivalry match. Your core message might be that this match is more than a game that this game is a major event. Now you must decide how to communicate this through different channels. On instagram you would translate your message through visual graphics. An email campaign would focus on reaching out to existing fans to provide them with information about the match and also tickets. On TikTok you want to focus on an engaging video. This is how you become more strategic in integrated communications. As a sports marketer it's important to understand that fans can interact with the same team in different ways and giving fans that opportunity creates more relevance, awareness, and connection. The goal isn't to make all these channels the same, but to use each channel's unique features and strengths to truly integrate and not just duplicate.
